'Gloom' UPDATED!

Tue Feb 17, 2009, 7:32 AM

  • Reading: The D.Gray Man Casting List
  • Watching: The News
  • Playing: Crunchyroll Avatar

For anyone who is not already aware, Funimation had liscensed the anime for D.Gray Man. Since they did a fairly decent job with Ouran, I decided keep an open mind about the dub and see how it goes. I mean, D.Gray Man is one of my top ten obsessions, and Allen is one of my top three, so I figured that since a dub would probably bring DGM into the limelight here in the US even more then it already is, I might wanna keep my eyes and ears open. Besides, considering that I'm not getting another dose of the DGM manga until March 9th (And thank goodness for Hoshino-san's recovery! ^^) I figured that maybe keeping tabs on the english DGM would keep me sated and happy.

Then I saw the casting list.

:cries:

I liked Todd Haberkorn as Hikaru in Ouran, don't get me wrong, but ALLEN?! His voice just seems too old for Allen! Couldn't they have found someone else to be Allen? Like a girl who can make her voice sound really boyish? That what they usually do for younger boys in voice acting, right? I have my doubts about Travis Willingham voicing Kanda too... I mean, his voice is really deep... but that I can kinda see. And since he did Mustang in Full Metal Alchemist, he's used to making fun of vertically challenged co-workers, too. :giggle:

From what little I've heard of her, Cherami Leigh definately has a sweet-but-creepy voice which would fit Road pretty well. I'm also willing to give Jason Liebrecht the benifit of the doubt for Lavi, since he pulled off a pretty good Train Hartnet in Black Cat (I still think Vic would make a better Lavi, though. But I heard a rumor that he'll be making an appearance as an Akuma). Luci Christian as Linalee is a bit of a gamble for me. I liked her voice as Kaname in Full Metal Panic, but if she does that squeaky girly Risa voice she pulled in the DNAngel dub again, I am so out. I couldn't bare to watch DNAngel in spite of sexy Vic!Dark, since Risa's voice was nails-on-chalkboard for me.

I thought J. Michael Tatum's voice was way too deep for Kyouya, and I'm kinda on the fence about how he might voice Komui, since I'm not sure how he'll handle the goofy, sister-con side of him... As for Wendy Powell voicing Hevlaska... well, cold as it may sound, Hevlaska isn't important enough to me that I'm all that concerned about her voice.

...I do wish they'd tell us what to expect with Miranda and Krory, though... Tyki, too.

Eh, I... can offer you a hug if you want...

Honestly I'm not much of a DGM fan. I like the manga, until seeing that the whole thing is stretching like forever. (I hate mangas that take more than 12 volumes to finish). I like a good story, but it went a bit "repetitive" for me after Allen got his "clown king" power upgrade. I check from time to time to see what's going on at my local Borders store, but other than that I'm not into it.

I'm afraid that I'm really an idiot when in comes to voice actors. I've never pay attention to that. I watch something if the art appeals to me and if I like how the voices sound then I'll stick. IS the same with actors. Nowadays I know who the heck is Angelina, Brad, Cruise and DiCaprio only because people around me have been rambling non-stop about them all the time. But as to who the heck is the actor of Batman or the new Superman (I knew who Reeves was - thank heavens!), no idea. Dunno. NEver intersted in that kind of thing.

I think I can feel your pain, though. If a fan like you - who knows her voice actors - find that some "decisions" are a bit "outrageous" then I do feel sorry. I hope they do make a good dub that you can enjoy, though.

Right now my manga obsessions are sort of limited. I got "Her Majesty's Dog" (which ends in volume 11 or 12, thanks the mangaka and I have vol 10), Immortal Rain (that is suppose to get to Vol 11 or 12 and I got #8) and Trinity Blood, which I stopped after vol 6, because I read some of the notes that the orinal creator - who died - left about where he wanted to take the story and in all honestly I hate it. Other than that, not much. Haven't found any other manga that rock my socks, but then again, I should check Borders more often >_<

I like in depth mangas, as long as the story moves along at a believable pace. D.Gray Man is one of my favorites, along with DNAngel, Full Metal Panic!, Skip Beat, Naruto, Bleach (Though lately, those two have gotten pretty monotonous.) and Detective Conan. Mostly, I enjoy anyhting that makes me laugh. And normally, I don't pay much attention to dubs, but I was a bit concerned about the D Gray Man one since I suspect that it will become pretty mainstream, and I want them to do a damn good job on it if it does. God knows we don't need another tacky 'Believe It' fiasco on our hands.

Uh, on a brighter note, D. Gray Man manga is officially coming back in the March issue of Jump! :D

BTW, it makes me happy that "Skip Beat" is up in your top 10 or 15. *really big grin here*

My top three Manga in no particular order: DNAngel (all your fault), Skip Beat, Bakuman. Of course Fullmetal Alchemist is in my top 10, along with Bleach, Naruto, Fairy Tail, a new one called Nurarihyon no Mago, D. Gray Man and Nora. I know I'm forgetting something too.

I know that feeling of horror when a favorite series is announced for a dub release. Part of me died inside when I heard the Gurren Lagann dub. (Which really isn't that bad, but... nobody can possibly hope in English to come close to the sheer awesome that Kamina is in Japanese.)

But hey, bad dubs give us subbie elitist pricks (says she who actually prefers a few dub versions over the subtitled versions...) ample fodder for making fun of!

that is the exact reason why i'm all about the manga, and no more anime; the voices...japanese already has me cringing slightly, dubs have me cringing visibly!

that, and i just discovered that FMA has a new chap since a week...without me knowing...so i'm off reading x)

little tip tho; either dont watch (works for me :P) or think the worst of it, and it'll exceed expectations! ;)

I don't know many Japanese voiceovers that make me cringe, but I've had that experience all too many times with Dubs.

Mmm, I still can't watch the Naruto anime, even in Japanese, because the dub ruined it for me. It took me years before I could start reading the manga again.

I'm kind of wary of talk of a Shugo Chara dub, since that seems like a bad idea. It's just one of those series that does better in it's native language, I think.
