I've been wryly amused by the Hollywood Live Action anime remakes that have been popping up with increasing frequency lately. Transformers, Speedracer, and especially Dragonball have all earned a *giggle!snort* and a headshake from me. I watched the first Transformers when it came out on HBO, and I intend to do the same with Speedracer and Dragonball when they do the same (Unfortunately, my friends are all jerks and wouldn't go see Dragonball with me in theatre, and it's no fun to go alone 'sulks' ) but even though I'm an anime fan, so far these american remakes haven't really bothered me.

Until now.

'Now' is when I caught wind of the fact that Mandalay Pictures plans to do a live action movie for Full Metal Panic!, which is ranked a solid #2 on Wing's All Time Favorite Animes EVER in the History of FOREVER list. (DNAngel is #1, and DGrayMan is #3.) And is the ONLY mecha I've ever been able to get any enjoyment from. (No matter how epic other people consider them, I still find any Gundam series and Evangelion to be dull and dry.)So the thought of a live action American Full Metal Panic movie makes me very, VERY nervous, especially when I hear that Zac Efron was being seriously considered for Sagara.

Yeah, the Zac Efron from High School Musical. That Zac Efron. I'm sure he's a great actor and all, but now I can't get the image of Sousuke singing and dancing around Jundai High out of my head! I mean, Sousuke is a stiff, hardcore military nut incapable of basic human interaction thrown into a world where he's at the mercy of a tempermental teenaged girl who doesn't have the patience to put up with his stupidity! T.T Thankfully, Efron turned the role down, but just knowing that he was the first pick for Sousuke doesn't bode well for how I see this movie turning out.

And what's this crap I'm reading about Kaname having mystical powers?! The Whispered ability is NOT 'mystical!' :rawr: And speaking of Kaname, they'd better choose a great actress to play her, since she's one of my favorite anime girls. I can't imagine any current actresses who could fill Kana-chan's shoes.

Ooh, I've got a bad feeling about all of this... 'glooms'

'glooms even harder'

Just found this intetrview with Zac Efron about the FMP! Movie.

I haaaaaaate it when people claim that they're a big manga fans when they can't even say the word 'manga' right! T.T You're not scoring points with the fanbase by making yourself look like an idiot!

....*has the though of Sousuke singing* Holy shit, that's scary and hysterically funny at the same time. XD

They are actually planning on making a live action Cowboy Bebop and Keanu Reeves (from the matrix)is playing Spike. I'm scared how that'd turn out. lol

I can think of a yaoi pairing between almost any anime. Come on, give me a anime! Death Note? LXLight! One Piece? ZoroXLuffy! Naruto? KakashiXNaruto! What? Thats right, i just said KakaNaru. Don't like my taste in yaoi? DEAL.
:iconcahhfleck:
well, Zac Efron is also being considered to play as Light Yagami in the Hollywood Death Note remake they're planning :| apparently he's an obvious choice for any anime remake because of the 'bishonen factor'.

I suspect if you give Gurren Lagann a shot, you'll have another mech anime on the list somewhere :p

But yeaaaah... Hollywood needs to figure out that these live action remakes based on anime don't do so well if they don't treat the source material right. It just pisses the fan base they're counting on off.

Haven't seen Dragonball yet (I'll wait for it to come out on DVD, rent it from the redbox at the market, and MST the crap out of it with friends!) but it's a perfect example; take a beloved franchise and try and reboot it or update it to be more palatable to American audiences, and instead drive away the fanbase AND fail to generate a more widespread audience. A series like, say, Cowboy Bebop... THAT could actually work in a live-action setting. Something like Dragonball? Or Eva? Not so much. (And someone would have to die if they ever try and tackle a live-action Gurren Lagann. >8F )

...Transformers isn't an anime. A Japanese studio was commissioned to do the animation for it, but other than the final visual it's totally American produced.

Sorry, but that misconception drives me CRAZY as a TF fan. xD

really, lol Thats a nice image, creepy zac. it'dbe funny to watch but not so much with the image.

maybe they're just asking for him to play the role because a lot of girls would go watch it just to see him, even if he's been all demonic in the screen

:iconcahhfleck:
well, there were alrady lots of comparision pics of Light and Zac on the internet before they even started thinking of making the movie so I think at least a portion of the fandom approves xD
And yes, especially because Light is supposed to be a ';pretty boy' type, at least at the beginning...

And how about the Avatar's live action movie? Not anime, but close enough.

Oh geez...The first person to try and make a singing and dancing Sagara gets a boot to the head, I am telling you now.

In my personal opinion, I really think they need to go back to making original movies rather than trying to keep making live action movies based off of pre-made creations. The problem is that they seem to be having a hard time coming up with any original movies that are any good nowadays.
